The Southeast Asian nation of Malaysia is an incredible destination and one of my favorite places to visit in South East Asia. Although it is a tropical country, it is the ultimate holiday location for those who want to relax in absolute luxury. From the bustling shopping malls and lavish hotels of Kuala Lumpur to the all-inclusive resorts and sandy shorelines of Langkawi, Malaysia has it all.
Luxury and Excitement in Kuala Lumpur
There is no question that of all the places to visit in Malaysia, Kuala Lumpur is the busiest as well as the most popular. KL, as Kuala Lumpur is known to locals, is the capital of the country and a true melting pot of cultures. The area known as the Golden Triangle in KL is perhaps one of the best shopping destinations in Asia, and fashion lovers will appreciate places like the MidValley Megamall, the upscale boutiques of Bukit Bintang and Suria KLCC, which is the largest mall in Malaysia and one of the city’s biggest tourism attractions. There is also no shortage of places to stay in Kuala Lumpur. Luxury travellers who value privacy will want to try out the Villa Samadhi Kuala Lumpur, which is small, just outside of the city and incredibly exclusive. Other luxury hotel favourites include the Sheraton Imperial Kuala Lumpur and the Le Meridien KL.
Laid-Back Relaxation in Langkawi
If you would rather relax on a tropical beach than shop until you drop in one of Asia’s biggest shopping malls, then you might want to consider flying to Langkawi. Known as the Jewel of Kedah, this collection of islands is 30 miles off the coast of Malaysia and is perhaps the biggest beach destination in the country. The islands are a dream for travellers with a sense of adventure. You might spend your time learning to surf, hiking underneath waterfalls, taking a private sailing course or scuba diving through breathtaking coral reefs. Dining is extensive and includes some of the world’s best seafood prepared in the local tradition, and nightlife involves sipping cocktails overlooking the water. For accommodation, travellers will have a choice of upscale options. I love The Datai Langkawi, which is a stunning private resort hidden in a pristine jungle. Other fabulous options are the villas of Bon Tom, the Westin Langkawi Resort & Spa, the Sheraton Langkawi Beach Resort and private chalets at the Meritus Pelangi Beach Resort & Spa.
Rich Heritage and Culture in Malacca
If you happen to be a history buff, then Malacca is a dream destination in Malaysia. Designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Malaccablends colonial history with the local culture, and the result is truly spectacular. A walking tour of the city allows you to see the architecture up close, and you won’t want to miss buildings like the 17th century Cheng Hoon Teng Temple, the 19th century Ditch Square, the 18th century Masjid Kampung Hulu and the Portuguese settlement that was first founded in 1511. A wonderful way to remember the scenery of the city is to indulge in a private cruise along the Melaka River at sunset. Stay at one of the luxury hotels in the city like the Casa del Rio or 45 Lekiu.
Holidays in Kota Kinabalu
The largest city on the island of Borneo, Kota Kinabula is a lush destination full of culture and breathtaking scenery. There are dozens of museums, galleries and historical attractions, but many visitors come to the area specifically to relax at one of the upscale resorts and try some fun outdoor activities. Scuba diving, surfing, deep-sea fishing, private river cruises, shopping and sailing courses are all fabulous ways to pass the time in Kota Kinabalu. Travellers ready to indulge will love the Bunga Raya Resort, business travellers tend to gravitate toward the Hyatt Regency Kinabalu and shopping fans will love the Le Méridien Kota Kinabalu, which is attached to an entire shopping complex.
Whether you crave a city experience, a holiday at the beach or a culture journey, one of these destinations in Malaysia is bound to the be the perfect place for your next adventure.
