The Stockbridge Restaurant is located on one of my favourite little streets in Edinburgh, St Stephens Street in beautiful Stockbridge. A family run business owned by Head Chef Jason and his partner Jane, the restaurant opened 13 years ago and has become an established favourite for many in the city looking for a traditional fine dining experience. TLE went along recently to find out more about the couples winning restaurant formula.
Background and Concept
Descend down the inviting steps of the restaurant, open the door and you are immediately greeted with a warm and friendly welcome, jackets are taken to the cloak-room and you are shown to your table dressed in fresh crisp white linen and finished with sturdy silver cutlery. The restaurant’s exposed walls are painted in a rich dark tone, large mirrors open the space up and the fireplace with the many years of dripped candle wax provides a focal point for the room – a cosy night of eating and drinking is in store.
The restaurant has A La Carte options as well at a set menu (available Tuesday to Friday). Menu’s are seasonal using fresh local ingredients. We opted for the 3 course set menu which is £33.95 for three courses. There is one vegetarian starter and one main starter but our server did add another couple of vegetarian dishes to the menu for me.
We started with a delicious basket of freshly baked breads which was accompanied by a chive dipping sauce, that was incredibly moreish. Following this a delicate amuse-bouche (cherry tomato, cheese, spring onion and a splash of balsamic) preceded our starters.
First courses included a rich Wild Mushroom Risotto finished with Parmesan crusts and a Trio of discs of moist pork belly, cheeks and fillet finished with diced black pudding and sweet potato purée.
Seconds were as beautiful as the mains, I opted for the Tortellini with cherry tomatoes, sage butter, thick slices of Parmesan and freshly crushed black pepper and my dining partner had the succulent Corn Fed Chicken, roasted potatoes, tortellini and drizzled with a wild mushroom Madeira sauce and truffle dressing.
A small sorbet pallet cleanser after mains cleared the way for dessert.
I opted for what was quite possibly the king of cheese boards, not one but 8 cheeses came with honey & pine nuts, fruits, and crackers, I loved all the cheeses, but the Cooleeney Brie and Hebridean Blue were incredible. My dining partner opted for a classic of Vanilla rice pudding, enhanced with an apple compote and cinnamon ice-cream.
