Edinburgh’s foremost boutique hotel comprising 35 rooms and suites spanning two recently restored William Playfair-inspired Victorian townhouses. Boasting a unique location both a short walk from the city centre and an easy and accessible drive to some of Scotland’s most sought-after beauty spots (plus complimentary parking) makes the hotel an ideal choice for road trippers or those trying their hand at small car rallies.
The West End of Edinburgh
Couples, groups of friends reuniting, intimate weddings and celebrations, road trippers.
Honouring the owners’ Orkney Islands roots, a recent renovation in 2017 injected a breath of fresh Orkney air into the look and feel of this boutique bolthole combining understated luxury with an inviting all-day restaurant and stylish cocktail bar. The evocative interiors subtly mix the old and the new, combining the neoclassic design of old town Edinburgh with the rugged, neutral tones of Orkney. Throughout the hotel, artworks curated by local artist, Nicky Brooks, of the iconic Red Door Gallery on Edinburgh’s Victoria Street, depict scenes of Edinburgh and Orkney, with a special Orkney collection curated by students of Edinburgh College of Art on show in the lounge.
Rooms and Suites
35 recently refurbished rooms and suites spanning two houses each oozing with style and character. Dunstane Houses’ four signature suites (the Dunstane Suite, the Scapa Suite, the Hoy Suite and the Ronadlsay Suite) individually celebrate their Victorian past with features including bold Jane Churchill peacock print wallpaper, elaborate ornate chandeliers and freestanding roll top bath tubs.
Food and Drink
Upon reopening, the hotel will be offering a flexible dining policy thanks to a newly introduced pre-arrival questionnaire. This allows guests to share with the team everything from their in-room drinks preferences to whether they would like to dine in the all-day lounge and bar – where the generous layout naturally caters to social distancing – or in-room, where all additional room service fees will be waved.
Guests will have the chance to savour a taste of owners’ Shirley and Derek Mowat’s homeland, Orkney, thanks to the iconic ‘Taste of Orkney’ platter (which comes with a choice of over 100 whiskies) or guests can sample one of 30 Scottish gins at the Ba’Bar. The hotel is also the only hotel in Scotland to offer the 40-year old Highland Park whisky!
The hotel’s concierge is on hand to fast-track guests into Edinburgh’s best restaurants just a short 10-minute walk from the hotel. Guided tours in one of owner Derek Mowat’s vintage cars are also available on request, and can take guests through old town Edinburgh, out to East Lothian or over to Fife, to explore some of Scotland’s beautiful wilderness spots.
Dunstane Houses guests also benefit from discounted treatments at the Guerlain Spa at the nearby Waldorf Astoria.
There are a number of local attractions on the Dunstane’s doorstep including: Edinburgh castle, Holyrood Palace, Arthur’s Seat, Edinburgh Zoo,
