A Swedish gin with British heritage
Hernö Old Tom Gin is a product of a craft distillery in the small village of Dala, just outside Härnösand in the High Coast of Sweden. Founder Jon Hillgren travelled to gin distilleries across the globe for inspiration and scoped out international locations, before opening his own in his homeland in 2011. However, Old Tom Gin actually has its roots in 18th century England. In those days, a black wooden cat was placed outside pubs to both to buy and sell the then illegal beverage. Allegedly, when a penny was placed in the cat’s mouth, the gin appeared via a tube hidden in one of its paws.
Extra smooth and slightly sweet
Created using the same distilled gin as its Hernö Gin and Hernö Navy Strength Gin, extra Meadowsweet is added in during the distillation process. Then, once diluted down to 43%, a little honey is added, lifting the floral notes, and releasing juniper for a super smooth finish. Natural organic botanicals are also used in the hand-hammered copper stills Kierstin and Marit. The resulting liquor is full-bodied, woody, bright and spicy, with additional notes of pine flowers. And its ideal served simply with tonic, in a Tom Collins or a Southside, sour, spritz or gimlet.
With the added accessibility of purchasing from one of 36 Waitrose stores across the country, this premium gin is now available to every home.
