Singapore, City Hall
Raffles Hotel Singapore
(5 stars)The place for a Singapore Sling, the colonial-era hotel invented the beverage in 1915 and serves it in its famed Long Bar. In a city where littering is illegal, the Long Bar has the unusual privilege of allowing patrons to discard the shells of monkey nuts (provided along with drinks) on the bar floor. Raffles hotels can now be found in other locations, but this was the original, named after Singapore’s founder, Sir Stamford Raffles. The ambience is refined, with an old world feel, as it was described in the novels of Somerset Maugham and Rudyard Kipling, with butler service, pretty verandahs and an elegant afternoon tea.
Singapore, Sentosa Island
Capella Singapore
(5 stars)The Capella hotel is set within thirty acres of beautifully maintained gardens where guests can enjoy peaceful walks while looking for the resident peacocks amidst an abundance of tropical plants. The white-washed exterior of the main hotel building which is more than one hundred years old, features two storeys of traditional archways and balustrades. The renovated interior comprises a luxurious blend of colonial and contemporary style with bold colour schemes. There are 112 spacious rooms and a choice of secluded villas. Some rooms have private balconies with stunning views of the coast or gardens. An imaginative, international cuisine is presented throughout the day at the hotel’s restaurant. Cocktails at sunset on the verandah which has glorious views of the South China Sea are not to be missed.
