Null Stern The Outdoor Hotel – Swiss Alps Spotlight

From the two minds behind the nuclear bunker hotel, comes a new creative experience, like no other hotel before. Conceptual artist brothers Frank and Patrik Riklin, have joined forces with renowned hospitality professional Daniel Charbonnier, to bring another unique hotel to the area of Safiental in Grisons, Switzerland. This truly exceptional hotel-art hybrid allows guests to experience the incredible Swiss countryside like never before, by sleeping outside, under the stars.

The Null Stern hotel is located on a Swiss mountainside and is the second unique concept by the Riklin brothers. Where the first Null Stern hotel was buried underground in an old nuclear bunker, sparsely furnished and with very little decoration, Null Stern version two is as close to nature as you can get. The hotel claims to be the first ‘zero-star hotel in the world’ and has no walls and no roof. Guests sleep in an open air double bed with little more than a (thick) duvet and a bedside lamp, although there is a promise of a local produce breakfast in bed, delivered by gloved butlers.

Frank and Patrik wanted to recreate a similar concept to the bunker hotel by “putting the guest at the centre of the experience…reducing everything else to the minimum.” They also wanted a hotel that showed off the amazing beauty of the Swiss countryside to it’s fullest potential and soon realised this would mean no physical walls; “The landscape of Switzerland is the imaginary building of the new Null Stern Hotel.” Shaking off the tradition of stars being used to judge and define the prestige of a hotel, the Null Stern is carving out a new path in hospitality.

Although an overnight stay in the nuclear shelter only cost $33, a one night stay under the stars will set you back $355. You are only able to book a stay during the (very short) European summer season, from the beginning of July until the end of August. Don’t expect to be able to stay any time soon however, as it is fully booked for 2016 (although you can put your name down on the waiting list for 2017). If you do manage to grab an elusive slot to stay at the “hotel”, be aware that bookings can be cancelled at last minute due to bad weather! The Riklin brothers and Charbonnier are also planning to expand the venture and open 25 other open-air rooms across different regions in Switzerland.
