Hyatt Hotels has announced the opening of Thompson Shanghai Expo, the first Thompson Hotels property in Asia Pacific and a significant moment for the lifestyle brand as it enters one of the world’s most creative and fast-moving cities. Located in the World Expo district in Shanghai, the hotel sits in an area known for culture, events and new development, offering travellers a base close to contemporary art, major venues and the Huangpu riverfront.

The hotel is part of Expo Place, a mixed-use complex that brings together retail, dining, leisure and workspaces. Guests are within easy reach of the Shanghai World Expo Exhibition and Convention Center, Mercedes-Benz Arena, the China Art Museum and former Expo pavilions that now house exhibitions and performance spaces. Connections to the wider city are straightforward, with nearby shopping streets, green spaces and metro stations.

Thompson Shanghai Expo has 254 rooms and suites with floor to ceiling windows and views of the skyline or river. SilverFox Studios has created interiors that reflect the district’s mix of industrial history and modern design, bringing together steel detailing, warm wood, soft textiles and pieces inspired by the 2010 World Expo. Rooms include marble bathrooms, coffee machines, Dyson hairdryers and well considered minibars, with evening turndown touches that add a sense of calm at the end of the day.

Dining includes BAOBAO Lounge, an indoor outdoor space overlooking a lively square serving steamed dishes, light snacks and local drinks. Fishermen’s Pavilion focuses on dishes from the Yangtze River Delta, prepared by Shanghai born chefs and served with river views from the 19th floor, along with several private dining rooms. TOTS, the rooftop venue on the 20th floor, offers cocktails, small plates, DJ sets and open air seating with sweeping views of the city.

Thompson’s lifestyle approach continues through partnerships and activities designed to connect guests with local culture. These include collaborations with artists, group riverside runs, music sessions and relaxed weekend gatherings at BAOBAO and TOTS. The opening marks a new chapter for the brand, drawing on its New York roots while establishing its identity in one of Asia’s most creative urban settings.
