Original Sokos Hotel Vaakuna is one of Helsinki’s great examples of functionalist architecture. Designed by Erkki Huttunen and opened for the 1952 Olympic Games, the hotel retains the character of that era through its curved lines, original furniture, brass room numbers and sculptural lighting. Staying here feels a little like stepping into the Helsinki of the 1950s, without sacrificing contemporary comfort.

Guest rooms continue the mid-century theme with restored original furnishings and wall-mounted bird motifs that echo those found in the hotel’s lobby. Large windows frame the city outside, but soundproofing shuts out the noise from the busy streets below. Rooms with balconies offer an even better vantage point, allowing guests to step outside and watch life unfold around the station square.

At the top of the building, breakfast is served above Helsinki’s rooftops, turning the first meal of the day into an opportunity to take in the view. The terrace comes into its own during the warmer months, when long lunches can slip into evening drinks in Helsinki’s late summer light. A sauna provides a quieter place to retreat after a day of sightseeing.

Central Station is directly opposite, so guests arriving by train can be at reception within minutes of stepping onto the platform. Many of Helsinki’s shops, museums and best-known landmarks are also within walking distance, yet the building itself remains one of the most interesting sights in the neighbourhood.
