Formerly an old, high-altitude climbing village in the Italian Alps, Cervinia has adopted skiers with an open heart. While it looks pretty modern, it retains a historic, rustic charm at its car-free centre that is bursting at the seams with restaurants, bars and shops galore.
Cervinia sits at an altitude of 2,050m, it is one of the highest and therefore, snow-sure resorts in the Alps and has an exceptionally long season – 8 months to be precise, between October and May. Cervinia is ideal for intermediate skiers, particularly later in the season when the weather is a little more settled, with its very long, wide and gentle runs, running all the way to Zermatt on the other side of the Swiss border.
There are some exciting challenges – a handful of black runs and a few moguls for experienced skiers. Off-piste, it’s imperative to be accompanied by a guide.
For non-skiers, there are a few alternatives – ice skating, fitness centre and shopping – but really, Cervinia lives for skiers. The restaurants are excellent and the nightlife comes into its own at weekends.
