This quiet Mexican town is located close to the Belize border, a bus or taxi ride from the party paradise of Cancun. Many visit here to see Lake Bacalar, a long, narrow strip of water with a white limestone bottom. Also known as the Lagoon of Seven Colours for its vibrant blue and turquoise hues, the lake is an incredible place to swim or snorkel. Other points of interest in Bacalar include the 18th-century Fuerte de San Felipe fort and piracy museum, the colonial-era San Joaquín Parish Church with its vaulted ceiling, and Cenote Azul lake with its subterranean caves.
