Perhaps best known for its sausages (frankfurters), this German city also has the claim to fame of being the birthplace of writer Johann Wolfgang von Goethe (you can visit the Goethe House Museum, his former home while you’re in town). Many visitors come for the picturesque Christmas markets or for business, as the city has long been a hub of industry and a technological innovator. You’ll find an abundance of flights to and from here — it has the third largest airport in Europe, along with excellent rail connections across the mainland — making travel arrangements a breeze.
