The capital of the Silesian province was a popular haunt of the European aristocracy back in the 17th century and has plenty from its past and present to attract the modern-day traveller. During the 19th and 20th centuries, it became a hub of industry, particularly coal mining, operating the first-ever fully automated mine. This had a huge impact on Katowice’s architecture, with hundreds of neighbourhoods built for miners and their families (many of which are fascinating to explore). As has often happened in urban industrialised areas, art, music and theatre has blossomed here, creating an exciting edginess for visitors that contrasts its more traditional attractions.
Monopol Hotel
A prestigious hotel with over a century of history, the Monopol has welcomed illustrious guests such as Charles de Gaulle and the famed Polish composer Karol Szymanowski. There are many nods to its 1920s heyday, particularly in the design of the classic Monopol Restaurant.
