Cù Bòcan, the experimental single malt produced each winter at Tomatin Distillery, has introduced its most inspiring release to date. Creation #7 honours two decades of peated whisky production at Tomatin and arrives with a flavour profile inspired by one of the distillery’s own historic styles.
The Creations series has long been the home for Cù Bòcan’s boundary-pushing approach to cask experimentation. This latest edition has been matured in a rare combination of Pineau des Charentes Rouge and American virgin oak, resulting in a whisky shaped by notes of rhubarb, custard, sweet oak spice and a gentle heather smoke. Blender and global brand ambassador Scott Adamson selected the Pineau casks to draw on Tomatin’s growing experience with fortified wine maturation, following recent projects such as the French Collection. He describes Creation #7 as an invitation to explore, with the seldom-used Pineau des Charentes Rouge casks unlocking nostalgic flavour cues that sit beautifully with the distillery’s lightly peated spirit.
The release coincides with a significant milestone for Tomatin. Since 2005, the final week of each year’s production has been devoted to creating a lightly peated new make, a tradition influenced by the distillery’s early reliance on local peat supplies when it was founded in 1897. These winter runs take advantage of exceptionally cold water temperatures, which help create a slightly oilier new make, now an integral characteristic of Cù Bòcan’s style.
Creation #7 is presented in the brand’s sculpted bottle and a vivid pink and yellow carton echoing the whisky’s rhubarb and custard profile. Natural in colour, non-chill filtered and bottled at 46% ABV. Limited to just 3,000 bottles worldwide, with 1,400 allocated to the UK. It is available now through Tomatin Distillery’s online shop.
