Hatozaki Whisky, produced at the Kaikyō Distillery on Japan’s southern coast, has introduced its latest expression, Hatozaki Triple Cask Reserve, a new permanent addition to the brand’s core range. Created by fourth-generation Master Distiller & Blender Kimio Yonezawa, this elegant release captures the artistry of Japanese whisky-making while embracing global influences. The result is a spirit that beautifully bridges East and West through craft, patience, and precision.
The Triple Cask Reserve is a complex blend of hand-selected malt whiskies, each aged in a trio of casks, ex-Bourbon, ex-Sherry, and, finally, rare Umeshu plum liqueur casks. This final maturation step is what sets the whisky apart. Umeshu, a beloved Japanese liqueur made by steeping green plums in alcohol, lends a delicate layer of fruit, gentle acidity, and floral sweetness. It’s a finishing technique seldom seen in the whisky world, demonstrating Yonezawa’s commitment to both innovation and cultural authenticity.
On the nose, Triple Cask Reserve opens with fragrant oak spice, black tea, and orange zest, followed by dried apricot and hints of vanilla mingling with toasted barley. The palate reveals soft layers of oak, dried citrus peel, and the faint sweetness of Umeshu, all carried on a silky texture that finishes with elegant restraint. At 46% ABV and bottled without colouring or chill filtration, it’s a whisky that speaks of purity and balance, hallmarks of the Hatozaki style.
Yonezawa’s approach reflects his dual influences: the precision and discipline of Japanese craftsmanship, and the open-minded curiosity of the global whisky community. Having inherited a family legacy that spans four generations, he brings a deep respect for time-honoured blending traditions, while also embracing experimentation with international casks and finishes. Each expression from Kaikyō Distillery, located near the Hatozaki lighthouse that inspired the brand name, reflects a maritime terroir shaped by sea breezes and a temperate coastal climate.
The Triple Cask Reserve joins the brand’s established range, including Hatozaki Finest Blended Whisky and Small Batch Whisky, each celebrated for its balance, clarity, and smoothness. Together, they represent Yonezawa’s pursuit of harmony between wood and spirit, sweetness and spice, innovation and heritage.
Hatozaki’s latest expression is not just a whisky to drink, but one to contemplate. It’s a celebration of craftsmanship and cultural storytelling, a whisky for moments of quiet reflection or shared enjoyment among friends
