Hot Couture: Timeless Swimwear for a Stylish Summer

As we dive headfirst into summer, the perfect swimsuit, one which is versatile, comfortable, chic and classy, is top of the holiday shopping list. Whether you’re an avid outdoor swimmer, a poolside lounger or a beach club enthusiast, the ideal swimsuit is an essential piece this season. From the history of swimwear, its timeless style and influential designers along with luxury swimwear brands to help keep you cool by the pool, and some of the best-selling designer pieces we think should be going straight in your suitcase. Read on for all this and more.

History

The swimsuit started out as a gown-like garment in the 18th century, but quickly evolved into something much chicer. By the 20th century, women’s swimwear became much more popular and stylish and designers such as Emanuel Ungaro, André Courrѐges, Giorgio Armani, Oscar de la Renta and Calvin Klein quickly emerged on the scene, creating the timeless style of swimsuit we still see today. The bikini was born in 1946, when designer Louis Réard controversially removed fabric from the classic one-piece and turned it into a two-piece. Whilst the bikini increased in popularity, the classic black one-piece became a summer wardrobe staple, and it remained more popular due to its practicality and elegant, flattering style.

Chanel was instrumental in taking the swimsuit from taboo to fashionable. It embodied the design aesthetic of the brand – stylish, versatile and favouring streamlined shapes. Coco Chanel led the way with her monochromatic bouclé one-piece, which jetsetters quickly snapped up due to its sheer perfection. Although new fabrics and different cuts may hit the scene, the design remains more or less unchanged purely because of how complimentary, comfortable and timeless it is.
