Set on the Black Sea, Batumi is the capital of the Georgian republic of Adjara. Its Old Town is filled with beautiful 19th-century architecture (this was once the haunt of the Russian elite in Imperial times), while its new town skyline is filled with illuminated skyscrapers; indeed, this is the second largest metropolis in the country, so a real hub of commerce. The climate is sub-tropical, suitable for year-round breaks, especially if you fancy a dip in the sea. Do wander along the boulevard – it’s like a step back into a bygone era, take a stroll through the botanical gardens and dine at the Piazza Square.
