The interiors are modern, yet effectively pay homage to the building’s past, with copious memorabilia and artworks. The Yard is the hotel’s aptly named restaurant, plus there’s a cosy colonial style Parlour and a whisky bar evocative of the art deco era. It’s also pet friendly, offers valet parking and has an onsite fitness centre.

Design studio Roman and Williams was enlisted to overhaul the 19th-century building in Covent Garden. And Ricari Studios and Katie England were brought on board as spa partners. Eat breakfast, lunch and dinner in a glass conservatory with a soaring triple-height ceiling. Drink in Side Hustle (once the Bow Street Police Station); The Library; and Common Decency cocktail bar. Book a Signature Suite for a clawfoot tub, entertaining spaces and views of the Royal Opera House.

Perched high on the wooded slopes is the evocatively-named ‘Cottage in the Wood’, in reality, a historic, hidden-away, luxury hotel on a hill and the ideal base from which to hike and explore the area, designated one of outstanding, natural beauty. This Georgian-built property was comprehensively refurbished after new owners took over in 2015. The multi-million pound renovation introduced a more contemporary, design-led, luxury aesthetic while still maintaining an elegant, country-house feel.
Thirty-two unique and stylish bedrooms are set across the hotel’s three properties – the Main House, Beech Cottage and the Coach House. Select rooms in The Coach House are dog-friendly. For larger groups and families, two luxurious, self-catering guest houses available, The Studio and The Chapel, which are tucked into the hillside just below the main hotel. Many rooms have sweeping and dramatic views of the Severn Valley, Vale of Evesham and the rolling hills of the Cotswolds.
Dining is a defining feature of ‘The Cottage’. The award-winning 1919 Restaurant has earned a reputation for refined modern British cooking, with seasonal, locally sourced ingredients shaping elegant tasting menus. The more relaxed Brasserie offers all-day dining with the same attention to quality. (4 stars)Idiosyncratic, whimsical and charming is what makes Oddfellow Boutique Hotel in Chester so unique. Located in the city centre within the city walls in a former Georgian Townhouse, the hotel offers boutique rooms, a fabulous cocktail bar and a gorgeous restaurant to dine in. Bedrooms are contemporary but warmlu in finish and filled with fun and curious accessories in keeping with the hotel’s name. Beds are luxuriously comfy, some rooms have roll top baths and loft rooms have exposed wood beam ceilings and if you want to go all out head to the Douglas Duplex Suite built in tribute to architect John Douglas who shaped much. The suite is split level, with sitting room, mezzanine bedroom with its own roll top bath in the bedroom. Formality is not the name of the game here so you eat anywhere in the hotel, from the glorious wood panelled cocktail bar to the hotel’s stunning restaurant or outside when the weather is nice.
