A New Era of Elegance, The Palace, a Luxury Collection Hotel opens in Madrid

Madrid welcomes back one of its most iconic landmarks, now reimagined as The Palace, a Luxury Collection Hotel, Madrid. Following an extensive two-year restoration, the former Westin Palace returns with a refreshed identity, blending rich historical heritage with contemporary luxury and world-class service.

Located in Barrio de las Letras, the hotel is surrounded by some of Madrid’s most renowned cultural institutions, including the Prado and Thyssen-Bornemisza Museums, as well as Retiro Park and Plaza Mayor. As part of the Paisaje de la Luz, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, The Palace stands at the heart of the city’s artistic and cultural history.

A key focus of the renovation was restoring the hotel’s 1912 façade, uncovering the original “Palace colour”, a warm beige contrasted with terracotta hues. The famed stained-glass and iron dome, a 1912 masterpiece by Eduardo Ferrés i Puig, has also been meticulously restored. The stunning glass palm tree chandelier, a signature element of the lobby, has returned to its original position beneath the dome.

Designed by Lázaro Rosa-Violán, the interiors blend classic grandeur with modern sophistication. Legendary past guests, including Pablo Picasso, Salvador Dalí, Mata Hari, and Ernest Hemingway, have influenced the décor. Hand-painted wallpapers depict landscapes from El Retiro Park, while bathroom mosaics offer an aerial perspective of the Royal Botanical Gardens. With 470 elegantly redesigned rooms and suites, each space exudes residential-style luxury, complete with marble fireplaces, mid-century chandeliers, and plush fabrics.

The hotel’s staff uniforms, designed by renowned Spanish designer Juanjo Oliva, further reflect the blend of classic and contemporary elegance.

At the heart of The Palace is La Cúpula, a refined all-day dining venue and cocktail bar located under the stunning glass dome. The menu celebrates the hotel’s legacy, featuring dishes inspired by past guests, such as Pablo Picasso’s Waldorf Salad and Julio Camba’s Steak Tartare. The bar’s décor includes Castilian leather seating, curated artwork, and historic 16th-century tapestries.

Another standout is 27 Club, formerly the Museo Bar, paying tribute to the Generation of ’27 poets who once gathered here. The bar retains its status as a living museum, featuring historic guest books and over 70 illustrations inspired by the hotel’s archives. The cocktail menu is a nod to the Pre-Prohibition and Prohibition eras, with signature drinks such as the 1912 John Collins, Whisky Sour 1927, and Negroni Un Americano en el Prado.

As part of The Luxury Collection, The Palace offers guests exclusive access to Madrid’s vibrant past and present, seamlessly blending heritage, design, and world-class hospitality.
