Hilton has announced the grand opening of Waldorf Astoria Shanghai Qiantan, a new urban sanctuary and the brand’s second property in Shanghai. Set on the southern stretch of the city’s New Bund in the vibrant Qiantan District of Pudong, the hotel introduces a fresh expression of the Waldorf Astoria legacy, where timeless elegance meets contemporary Shanghai energy. With this debut, Shanghai becomes only the third city in the world to host two Waldorf Astoria hotels, joining the ranks of global capitals such as New York and Dubai.

Sitting opposite its sister property, Waldorf Astoria Shanghai on the Bund, the new Qiantan address captures the spirit of contrast, urban yet serene, connected yet cocooned. Overlooking the Huangpu River, the property enjoys direct access to Qiantan Park and Qiantan Youcheng Park’s waterfront promenade, offering sweeping river views and a sense of space amid the bustle of the metropolis. Guests can move effortlessly between Shanghai’s cultural landmarks, luxury retail precincts, and business districts, while retreating to a calm, nature-framed environment just minutes away.

A collaboration between Kohn Pedersen Fox (KPF) and Cheng Chung Design (CCD), the hotel’s architecture and interiors reinterpret Shanghai’s Art Deco heritage through a modern, international lens. The design narrative integrates subtle maritime and riverfront inspirations, seen in the sail-like forms, polished brass accents, and flowing lines throughout. Iconic Waldorf Astoria motifs such as the peacock pattern are paired with soft marble, lacquered wood, and handcrafted Chinese detailing to evoke harmony between East and West.

Inside, guests discover 204 rooms and suites that start at 52 square metres, all featuring private balconies, floor-to-ceiling windows, and refined materials such as silk panels and natural stone. Suites present spacious living areas, freestanding bathtubs, and in select accommodations, outdoor jacuzzis overlooking the river. Each room offers an environment of calm, designed for both leisure and business travellers seeking respite from the city’s rhythm.

Dining is central to the Waldorf Astoria experience, and the Qiantan property continues this tradition with three distinctive restaurants and lounges. Arame celebrates modern European cuisine shaped by local produce, where French techniques meet contemporary presentation. The menu highlights seasonal ingredients sourced from China’s regional farms and markets, with an emphasis on lightness and creativity.

Fu Cheng, helmed by Michelin-starred chef Justin Yang, offers a refined interpretation of Min cuisine from Quanzhou, Fujian province. The experience is complemented by tea sommeliers who curate pairings that enhance each course, and a chef’s omakase-style tasting menu that showcases premium ingredients through artistry and restraint. For an immersive and exclusive experience, the Starlight Room offers a reservation-only chef’s table complete with an open kitchen and private terrace, an ideal venue for intimate gatherings and special occasions framed by the glittering Shanghai skyline.

At the heart of the hotel lies Peacock Alley, a signature hallmark of the brand inspired by its iconic New York predecessor. With floor-to-ceiling views of greenery and riverfront scenes, it serves as the hotel’s social epicentre, offering afternoon teas, Champagne evenings, and craft cocktails prepared tableside. Interactive preparation areas, a pastry atelier, and a dedicated beverage bar bring theatre to the experience, celebrating craftsmanship in every detail.

Waldorf Astoria Shanghai Qiantan’s wellness facilities provide guests with a sanctuary of calm and renewal. The 25-metre indoor heated pool is bathed in natural light from a glass skylight, surrounded by white marble finishes and serene loungers. The 24-hour fitness centre offers advanced Technogym equipment and a multi-functional training zone for yoga or personalised sessions. The spa features four private treatment rooms where signature therapies blend traditional Chinese techniques with modern sensibilities. The soft beige and ivory interiors, marble accents, and curated greenery enhance the sense of tranquillity. Outdoor enthusiasts can enjoy riverside jogging trails, cycling paths, and sunrise yoga sessions in nearby parks, creating a holistic wellbeing experience that flows between indoors and out.

Close to some of Shanghai’s most prominent cultural landmarks, the hotel is at the centre of the city’s thriving creative scene. The West Bund Art Museum, Tank Shanghai, and the Long Museum are just moments away, while the nearby Qiantan Taikoo Li offers luxury shopping and vibrant dining. This proximity reflects Waldorf Astoria’s commitment to art, culture, and design, curating experiences that allow guests to discover and engage with the destination.
