Hotel Ambasador Split – Hotel Review

Overlooking Split’s elegant  Riva Promenade and the glittering Adriatic beyond, Hotel Ambasador has quickly established itself as one of the city’s most desirable luxury addresses. Reopened in 2022 on the site of the original 1937 hotel of the same name, this contemporary five-star property combines a sophisticated nautical aesthetic with a location that places guests within easy walking distance of both the historic Old Town and the fashionable marina district. Clean modern lines, expansive glass frontage and spacious terraces give the hotel a sleek yacht-club feel, perfectly suited to its waterfront setting. The Luxury Editor recently checked in, so read on to find out more.

Features

Inside, natural stone, warm woods and a palette inspired by the Adriatic create a calm, contemporary atmosphere. Thoughtful details celebrate local heritage – from the striking reception desk handcrafted from 1,850-year-old black oak recovered from the bed of the Sava River to chairs designed by celebrated Croatian architect and designer Bernardo Bernardi. The hotel’s 101 rooms and suites pair understated luxury with contemporary comfort. Many feature private balconies overlooking the harbour where ferries, yachts and fishing boats provide an ever-changing backdrop throughout the day. Dining centres around Restaurant Méditerranée, where locally sourced Dalmatian ingredients are transformed into refined Mediterranean dishes while the adjoining bar and waterfront terrace are ideal for sunset cocktails and leisurely people-watching. Among the hotel’s highlights is the stylish pool on the third-floor roof terrace. Complete with a pool bar and exceptionally comfortable loungers, it offers sweeping views across the harbour, sea and terracotta rooftops of the old city. The Hacelia Spa provides a peaceful retreat with treatment rooms, sauna facilities and a fitness centre. With its prime waterfront location, polished service and effortless blend of contemporary luxury and local character, Hotel Ambasador offers a sophisticated base from which to explore one of Croatia’s most captivating coastal cities.

History

The original Hotel Ambasador first opened in 1937, when Split was emerging as one of the Adriatic’s most fashionable destinations. Designed by Czech-Croatian architect Josip Kodl, it even boasted the city’s first neon sign. During its heyday, the hotel welcomed thousands of visitors and became a much-loved landmark on the waterfront. Following the Second World War, the building was used by the Yugoslav National Army and later briefly housed emigrants during the conflicts of the 1990s. Thereafter, the property fell into decline, standing abandoned in a prime seafront location until 2016. The site was eventually purchased by Klaus Alex Birkenstock, heir to the Birkenstock shoe empire, who initially planned a restoration before deciding that the deteriorating structure should be replaced entirely. The vision was to create a new Hotel Ambasador that respected the spirit of its predecessor while delivering the standards expected by modern luxury travellers. When the new hotel opened in 2022, it marked the start of a fresh chapter while maintaining a clear connection to its past through its name and iconic waterfront setting. Today, it blends contemporary architecture and five-star comforts with a heritage that spans more than eight decades, reflecting Split’s own transformation into one of Europe’s most desirable coastal destinations.

Location

One of Hotel Ambassador’s greatest assets is its enviable waterfront location. Guests can stroll to the UNESCO-listed Diocletian’s Palace in just a few minutes, explore Split’s vibrant café culture or simply watch boats drift across the harbour from the hotel terrace. The atmosphere feels distinctly Riviera-like – cosmopolitan yet wonderfully relaxed. The pine-clad slopes of Marjan Forest Park are also within easy reach, offering scenic walking trails, cycling routes, and panoramic views across the city, islands and Dalmatian coastline. For those arriving by car, the hotel is particularly convenient. Split Airport is around 30 minutes away while on-site parking provides a welcome advantage over many Old Town properties, allowing guests to explore the city without the challenge of navigating its narrow historic streets.

Check In

I was immediately impressed by the reception area – not least because of the striking statement light installation suspended above the lobby. Resembling a cascade of illuminated glass droplets caught in mid-air, it draws the eye upwards and adds a sense of drama to the space. Combined with floor-to-ceiling windows that flood the lobby with natural light, it creates an atmosphere that feels both glamorous and effortlessly modern. I liked the elegant and uncluttered design of the area – all pale stone, warm timber accents and comfortable seating areas positioned to make the most of the incredible harbour views. The Adriatic seems almost part of the décor, visible as it is through the vast expanses of glass that frame the waterfront beyond. I was also intrigued by the stunning collection of black-and-white photographs by celebrated local photojournalist Feđa Klarić. His images beautifully capture vintage everyday scenes of Dalmatian life through the decades. I was greeted warmly by reception staff and offered a welcome drink while the formalities were completed. The process itself was refreshingly swift and seamless with none of the lengthy waiting often associated with larger luxury hotels. It was exactly the sort of polished, welcoming arrival experience that sets the tone for a memorable stay.

Rooms

The 101 guestrooms and suites at Hotel Ambasador continue the property’s contemporary Mediterranean aesthetic, blending clean-lined design with subtle nods to the Dalmatian coast. Décor is calm and understated with pale wood finishes, soft neutral tones and floor-to-ceiling windows that flood rooms with natural light and, in many cases, showcase superb harbour and sea views. Accommodation ranges from Classic and Superior Rooms to spacious Premium Rooms and a small collection of suites. Even entry-level categories are generously equipped, featuring king-size beds, marble bathrooms, espresso machines, minibars, bathrobes and luxury toiletries. Superior and Premium Sea View Rooms are especially appealing with panoramic views of the sea, ferries, yachts and the distant Dalmatian islands. Many Premium Rooms also benefit from private balconies overlooking the waterfront. At the top of the range sits the 110-square-metre Ambasador Suite, complete with separate living and dining areas, a guest bathroom and sweeping views across the city, harbour and Adriatic. Throughout the hotel, the emphasis is firmly on comfort, light and understated luxury.

My Room

I was hosted in a Premium Sea View Room with Balcony which perfectly encapsulated Hotel Ambasador’s sophisticated yet relaxed approach to luxury. Located on the waterfront, the room immediately drew my eye towards the floor-to-ceiling windows and the spectacular panorama beyond. Split’s bustling harbour stretched out below with ferries gliding across the water, sleek yachts moored in the marina and the distant Dalmatian islands shimmering on the horizon. The room itself felt spacious and beautifully designed with a palette inspired by the Adriatic coast. Pale oak finishes, soft creams and muted grey-blue accents created a calming atmosphere while more examples of Klaric’s black and white photographs and subtle nautical touches gave a sense of place. A supremely comfortable king-size bed occupied centre stage, dressed in crisp white linens and piled with plump pillows. Opposite sat a stylish seating area, perfect for enjoying a morning coffee while admiring the view.

Thoughtful details elevated the experience throughout. A Krups expresso machine, minibar stocked with local and international refreshments, smart television and speedy Wi-Fi were all seamlessly integrated into the design. The wardrobe offered ample storage while discreet lighting allowed the room to transition effortlessly from bright and airy during the day to warm and inviting in the evening. The bathroom was equally impressive. Clad in elegant stone and marble-effect finishes, it featured a generous walk-in rainfall shower, fluffy robes, slippers and Bulgari toiletries that added a spa-like feel. However, the balcony was undoubtedly the star of the show. Furnished with comfortable chairs and a table, it quickly became my favourite spot in the hotel. I spent early mornings watching the city awaken and evenings lingering over a glass of Croatian wine as the harbour lights began to twinkle. There was something endlessly captivating about the ever-changing seascape – from fishing boats heading out at dawn to cruise ships arriving dramatically in the distance.

Food and Drink

Restaurant Méditerranée

Restaurant Méditerranée is every bit as polished and elegant as the hotel itself. The design is contemporary yet welcoming, displaying the property’s signature palette of soft neutrals, natural stone and warm wood which create a relaxed Mediterranean feel. Floor-to-ceiling windows flood the space with light during the day while in the evening subtle lighting gives the restaurant a sophisticated, intimate atmosphere. Tables are generously spaced, giving a sense of calm and exclusivity. The real star, however, is the beautiful waterfront terrace. Positioned directly beside the sea, it offers front-row views across the harbour and the historic skyline of Split, making it one of the city’s most desirable dining spots. Whether enjoying breakfast in the morning sunshine or dinner accompanied by the glow of the marina lights, the setting feels effortlessly glamorous and unmistakably Mediterranean.

Breakfast

Breakfast at Restaurant Méditerranée was a wonderfully relaxed start to the day. Alongside a beautifully presented buffet laden with freshly baked pastries, artisan breads, seasonal fruit, yoghurt, cereals, local cheeses and cured meats, there was also an excellent à la carte menu cooked to order. My standout dish was the eggs Benedict, featuring perfectly poached eggs, silky hollandaise and a generous helping of ham on a toasted muffin. Accompanied by excellent coffee and attentive service, it struck just the right balance between indulgence and simplicity, providing a satisfying start to a day spent exploring Split.

Dinner

Arriving just before sunset, I was shown to a table overlooking the marina. To start, I chose the beef tartare, a beautifully composed dish that elevated a classic favourite. The finely cut beef was rich and delicately seasoned, while crispy potato added a welcome crunch and textural contrast. Pickled mustard seeds brought little bursts of sharpness that cut through the richness and a silky chive mayonnaise added freshness and depth. The finishing touch was a light cheese mousse, which lent a subtle creaminess and tied the various elements together beautifully. It was heaven on a plate. Likewise, the roasted tuna belly which I chose for my main. The fish was succulent and buttery, paired with confit mushrooms, mushroom mayonnaise and mushroom ketchup – creating layers of earthy flavour that complemented the tuna perfectly. Juniper needle oil added a fragrant, almost woodland-like freshness while the cumin crust introduced a subtle warmth and spice. I was ‘elegantly sufficed’ but couldn’t resist dessert. I opted for the Chocolate–Cherry – a 55% chocolate sponge layered with white chocolate crèmeux and crisp chocolate tuile accompanied by a sour cherry sauce infused with The Macallan 12 Sherry Oak whisky. A paradise of a pud! Service throughout was warm, knowledgeable and impeccably timed, allowing the meal to unfold at a relaxed pace. Paired with Croatian wine and accompanied by those mesmerising harbour views, it was a dining experience to truly savour.

Bar Split

Set at the front of the property overlooking the promenade, Bar Split is a place where locals and guests mingle throughout the day, creating a lively yet sophisticated atmosphere. Comfortable armchairs, contemporary artwork and sleek design details give the space a cosmopolitan feel while the large windows keep the focus firmly on the harbour beyond. I particularly loved the adjoining terrace where I could sit with a cocktail and watch the steady procession of yachts, ferries and evening strollers along the Riva waterfront. From morning coffees to expertly mixed cocktails and Croatian wines after dark, Bar Split has an easy-going glamour that perfectly captures the spirit of modern Split.

Hacelia Spa

This tranquil wellness space tucked away in the basement of the hotel features a Finnish sauna, steam room, and relaxation area complete with a Himalayan salt wall and an intriguing zero-gravity dry floatation bed. The treatment menu is extensive, ranging from classic Swedish and deep-tissue massages to aromatherapy rituals, body scrubs, facials and bespoke wellness treatments using local herbs and oils. I opted for the 60-minute Swedish massage and it proved to be an hour of utter bliss. Using flowing, rhythmic movements and just the right amount of pressure, my therapist gently eased away tensions and stiffness – so much so that I dozed off. Afterwards, I retreated to the relaxation area with herbal tea, sinking into a lounger while I flicked through a glossy magazine. Bliss x 2! For the more energetic, there is also a well-equipped gym.

Excursions

The area also provides a wealth of cultural experiences and day excursions, and during my stay I experienced three of these.

Guided walking tour of Split’s UNESCO-listed old town

In just a few hours, I discovered the highlights of Split with the help of our excellent guide, Dinah Roguljić from Laguida Split Tours. Together we explored landmarks including Diocletian’s Palace – its atmospheric courtyards and passageways, the grand Peristyle (ceremonial space) and remarkably well-preserved ancient cellars beneath the palace. We also stopped at the famous statue of Gregory of Nin, a popular city landmark. Throughout the tour, Dinah brought Split’s rich Roman, Venetian and Croatian heritage vividly to life with a wealth of stories and fascinating historical insights.

Cooking Class

Learning to make ‘Soparnik’ – a traditional Dalmatian pie of Swiss chard, onions and olive oil with Ljubica from Bulić Rural Tourism was one of the highlights of my stay. Set amid olive groves and rolling countryside, the experience began with feeding the property’s friendly donkeys before gathering in a rustic outdoor kitchen to prepare the pie. As our hand-rolled Soparnik baked beneath a bell-shaped iron dome covered with hot embers, a local klapa singer performed traditional songs. The finished dish was delicious but it was the setting, music and hospitality that made the experience unforgettable.

White Water Rafting

With expert guide Ante from Split Rafting, I spent an adrenaline-filled afternoon white-water rafting on the Cetina River near Omiš, around 30 to 45 minutes from Split. The river winds through dramatic limestone gorges and combines gentle stretches with exhilarating rapids. It was a wild, unforgettable ride but in Ante’s safe hands, never felt scary. Cave exploration, cliff jumping and swimming can also be enjoyed by the adventurous!

Final Thoughts

Delivering genuine five-star luxury without a hint of pretension, the Ambassador combines an enviable waterfront location with thoughtful design, polished service and exceptional attention to detail. From the moment I arrived, I found myself drawn to the mesmerising harbour views – whether watching ferries glide across the Adriatic from my balcony, lingering over breakfast or enjoying a sunset cocktail at Bar Split. What stayed with me most, however, was the sense of ease. Everything flowed seamlessly, allowing me to slow down and fully appreciate both the hotel and the city beyond. Combined with memorable dining at Restaurant Méditerranée, spending time by the pool, and an hour of blissful relaxation in Hacelia Spa, Hotel Ambasador proved to be far more than simply a place to sleep. It is a destination in its own right.
