Shangri-La Shougang Park, Beijing Review

See why The Shangri-La Shougang Park, Beijing is the perfect luxury hotel choice for your next China family vacation (choose one of the family-themed suites!). The Shangri-La Shougang Park, Beijing could not have been a more perfect choice for our recent trip. We travelled to China’s vibrant and busy city for the Easter break. Once a formidable symbol of Beijing’s industrial might, the Shangri-La Shougang Park hotel has been transformed into a captivating fusion of history, art, and contemporary comfort.

Nestled within the city’s ambitious urban renewal project, this hotel exemplifies how a once-bustling steel mill can be reborn as a sanctuary of design and serenity, appealing to families, creatives, and global travellers seeking an immersive experience that bridges the past and future.

Background and Concept

Set in the heart of the historic Shougang industrial zone, the site has undergone a dramatic renaissance. Originally a core iron and steel manufacturing hub, the area was pivotal to Beijing’s economic development before being repurposed for the 2022 Winter Olympics and urban renewal. The hotel was conceived by the renowned architectural firm Lissoni & Partners, who drew inspiration from the site’s industrial roots while infusing the space with sleek, modern luxury.

The design emphasises the raw beauty of exposed steel structures, expansive volumes, and natural light, complemented by refined textures, calming hues, and innovative use of sustainable materials. It’s a narrative of transformation where grit becomes grace and history becomes art.

Location

Strategically positioned within Shougang Park, the hotel offers a tranquil retreat from the city’s hustle yet remains easily accessible from downtown Beijing. The surrounding area is a vibrant cultural hub, featuring striking sights such as the Big Air Shougang ski jump, an architectural marvel and Olympic landmark.

Guests can stroll along lakeside pathways, traverse skybridges, and explore Olympic venues, all while soaking in panoramic views of Beijing’s skyline. Whether visiting for business, leisure, or sporting events, the location strikes an ideal balance of serenity and connectivity.

Rooms and Suites – Overview

The accommodations blend minimalist elegance with industrial chic, featuring muted tones, plush textiles, and large windows that reveal the dynamic landscape of the park. All rooms include Shangri-La’s signature plush bedding, eco-friendly amenities, and soundproofing to ensure tranquillity.

Even though I have lived and worked in China for many years, and have been to Beijing numerous times, this was our first stay at this hotel and visit to this part of Beijing. Therefore, I traded emails with the concierge desk team and the General Manager before my stay to ask questions about things to do in this part of Beijing, airport transfers and more. I always received much-appreciated prompt replies.

What I liked most about the concierge team at Shangri-La Shougang Park, Beijing, is how accessible they are.

This is what the true Shangri-La service is all about. They come out from behind the desk to talk to guests one-on-one about their itineraries, make sure transfers are executed as they’ve planned, and greet guests as they enter and exit the hotel. The staff made sure we were settled in our Suite and that everything was perfect. This is service that is over and beyond what I was expecting at even a Shangri-La property.

Our Suite During Our Stay

The Shangri-La Shougang Park, Beijing, is a very family-friendly luxury hotel. In fact, they have a kids and family package that can be booked, which includes special amenities, a complimentary pantry and laundry 24/7, and access to an indoor play area [extra costs] if the stay overlaps a weekend.

During our stay, we experienced the spectacular Treetop Themed Family Suite, a standout accommodation that perfectly blends playfulness with luxury. This spacious suite features a whimsical, nature-inspired design tailored for families:

A dedicated children’s zone with themed decor and playful elements creates an imaginative haven for kids, including a whimsical mouse hole entryway that connects the adults’ and kids’ rooms an unexpected delight. The cosy, multi-level bunk bed setup (complete with an additional full bed) comfortably accommodates a family of five or six, with soft nightlights and lullaby music helping little ones wind down after an action-packed day.

For convenience, every comfort has been anticipated. Bathrooms are fitted with heated mirrors and rain and hand showers that are blissfully easy to operate no puzzling hotel tech here. The motion-sensitive toilet lid quietly opens on approach, and motion-sensor curtains in the suite glide open with a simple wave. The family pantry, with beautifully handcrafted Luzerne mugs, became our tea-time retreat, while its unlimited access to washing machines and dryers turned out to be a game-changer, especially for longer stays.

Children were thrilled to find kid-sized tables and chairs stocked with adorable stationery, art supplies, and themed amenity kits. A thoughtful goodie bag added to the excitement. Meanwhile, adults could enjoy moments of quiet with bath salts in the soaking tub, soft slippers and robes (provided in both adult and kid sizes), and the suite’s quirky Bluetooth speaker shaped like a pug a major hit with our little ones.

Tech-wise, the suite features two enormous smart TVs (perfect for family movie nights), and a dehumidifier and two air purifiers came pre-installed ideal for managing Beijing’s occasionally heavy air. On sunnier days, we enjoyed morning coffee or let the kids play in the suite’s private garden, and when weather turned, the suite’s family-sized umbrellas were ready and waiting.

The whole experience was not just luxurious but refreshingly effortless proof that every detail, from bedtime quotes left by the pillow to gym access for sneaking in a workout, had been thoughtfully curated with families in mind.

Dining at Shangri-La Shougang Park is a celebration of local flavours and international influences, served in a setting that honours the site’s historic character.

Breakfast is a lavish buffet featuring traditional congee, freshly baked bread, and a variety of healthy options ideal for fuelling a day of exploration or work. To give you an idea, breakfast includes everything from fresh Chinese and English cuisines – fresh bread, muffins, pastries, cereals, fruit, a selection of gourmet cheese yogurts, congee, dumplings, salad and a variety of warm dishes like sautéed mushrooms, bacon, sausage and more. In addition, made-to-order pancakes, eggs, French toast, oatmeal can be requested from a menu at the table. The chef can make eggs in any style you like, according to your dietary requirements.

The Lai Huang Bao we had at breakfast was easily the best I’ve ever tasted full credit to the chefs. Afternoon tea was another standout: sweet, decadent, and beautifully presented.

There is a buffet lunch which consists of a salad bar, fresh breads, fruit, cheese and charcuterie, desserts as well as other hot and cold dishes. Afternoon tea was by far my favourite with sweet and savoury desserts and sandwiches served on a traditional three-tiered tray.

It’s stocked with amenities, even down to the hair ties you may have forgotten. If you are not staying in the hotel, of course, it’s still possible to spa here and you’ll be able to use the indoor pool and lounge facilities.
