The Palmetto Hotel – Hotel Review

Right in the heart of one of the USA’s most charming cities, quietly sitting centre stage, is the Palmetto Hotel, an understated boutique hotel that perfectly captures Charleston’s character. With its warm Southern hospitality, thoughtfully designed interiors that are as beautiful as they are practical, and what is, in my opinion, the best espresso martini in town, the Palmetto Hotel has all the ingredients for an unforgettable stay in the Holy City.

Location

Occupying one of the prime addresses in Charleston, and set within the heart of the historic district, The Palmetto Hotel is perfectly situated to explore all that the city has to offer. Some of Charleston’s most recognisable landmarks are just moments away, with Rainbow Row and its iconic pastel-coloured Georgian homes, The Battery and White Point Garden boasting sweeping views across Fort Sumter and Charleston Harbor, and King Street, renowned for shopping and home to some of the best city restaurants, all within a ten-minute walk.

The beauty of staying at The Palmetto Hotel is that Charleston can be discovered effortlessly on foot. Travelling without a car can often be a logistical nightmare, but one of the biggest draws for me was I had the freedom to simply step outside and let the city unfold around me. It sets the tone for a slower, more relaxed way of experiencing Charleston without the need to plan every detail of the day.

The Space

From the moment you step through the doors, it’s clear the interiors have been carefully considered. Rather than relying on bold statements and grand design, the interiors unfold the story of Charleston, allowing a natural flow from one space to the next. From historic black-and-white photographs to carefully restored antiques reimagined with custom upholstery, as inspired by iconic Lowcountry landscapes, there is a sense of pride and celebration of the city’s rich history, making The Palmetto Hotel more than just an ordinary city stay.

Also dotted throughout are original artwork by Charleston-based artists dating back to the early 1900s, blended with contemporary commissions that bring a fresh perspective without losing sight of the hotel’s heritage. The space feels authentic whilst boasting quiet luxury and celebrating Charleston’s past without feeling like a museum.

My Room

My Deluxe King Room felt quintessentially Charleston and an extension of the city itself, creating an atmosphere of returning home at the end of each day rather than to a hotel room. The neutral, sandy tones flowed naturally throughout the space, with a rattan-style king-size bed purposefully positioned against a feature wall adorned with the iconic palmetto trees that have become synonymous with the city. Soft furnishings completed the palette with their hues of soft green and coastal blue, a subtle reflection of Charleston’s waterfront setting, while the antiques and artwork found throughout the hotel carried through into the rooms, reinforcing the city’s rich history and unmistakable character.

The bathroom reflected the same understated elegance and timeless aesthetic as found throughout the hotel. The white marble tiles and matching vanity were complemented by Bamford’s signature green amenities, providing a very welcome touch of luxury. However, the highlight for me after a long day in the sun and sea was the oversized walk-in shower with its invigorating body jets, giving the perfect refresh before making my way to the hotel’s bar for a sip of their signature espresso martini.

It was this carefully chosen and intentional design to reflect Charleston’s personality without feeling overly themed that really made this stay unique, striking the perfect balance between style, practicality, and comfort, which represented all the elements I look for in a short city stay.

The Bar

The bar is a work of art in its own right. The long L-shaped black and grey marbled countertop curves elegantly around the space, as complemented by black and gold bar stools that make it almost impossible not to stop for a drink or three. With the deep green walls as a backdrop and a striking mirror display reflecting an impressive collection of premium spirits, the space felt both intimate and sophisticated, beckoning you to take a seat.

The cocktail menu is impressive but the knockout cocktail for me was the espresso martini, dubbed the best in Charleston, which was easy to understand why after one sip. They were dangerously easy to drink, and the freshly shaved chocolate on top added a hint of indulgence that made me want to order the drink every day of my stay.

By morning, the bar takes on a completely different character, transforming into an informal and leisurely breakfast space serving Southern favourites such as biscuits and gravy, and grits. While the buffet is relatively small, it’s plentiful to fuel a morning of wandering Charleston’s historic streets.

Final thoughts

If you’re looking for something a little different from the usual city hotel, The Palmetto Hotel offers exactly that. It doesn’t try to steal the spotlight from Charleston, but rather it complements the city beautifully by blending in and serving as an extension to it. From the genuinely warm Southern hospitality to the thoughtful and well-reflective interiors, every element is designed to be intentional as well as practical, providing a home away from home. This is the kind of hotel that remains in your memories for how unique it is, one that you will find yourself naturally recommending to others long after your stay.
