Verride Palácio de Santa Catarina Review

In Lisbon’s vibrant Bica neighbourhood, where the iconic funicular climbs the steep hill and sweeping river views captivate visitors, stands Verride Palacio Santa Catarina Hotel. This 18th-century mansion, now a member of Small Luxury Hotels of the World, is a storied setting for a short stay, where historical grandeur blends with contemporary luxury.

The palace owes its stylish transformation to owner Kees Eijord, an art collector and floral designer whose influence is evident throughout the property. Impressive artworks adorn the walls while fresh floral arrangements bring life to the historic spaces, writes Andrew Forbes (The Luxury Editor).

Arrival

The welcome at Verride Palacio Santa Catarina, a member of Small Luxury Hotels of the World, sets the tone for the entire stay. Check-in proves swift and engaging, with the front desk sharing fascinating stories about the palace that bring its history to life and build anticipation for the experience ahead.

Their knowledge extends beyond the hotel itself to the surrounding Bica district, now firmly established as one of Lisbon’s most captivating neighbourhoods. The area has become a magnet for locals and visitors alike, drawn by its lively mix of bars and trendy restaurants.

Accommodation

The palace houses just 18 rooms, ranging from bright contemporary suites to opulent Royal Suites that preserve 18th-century character.

Each suite has unique views of either the city, river or castle, along with original artwork, thoughtfully selected furniture and exquisite detailing.

Our Premium Suite felt like the perfect Lisbon pied à terre. A high-ceilinged principal bedroom connects to a long salon with tall terrace windows that open to reveal views of both the city and the river. The large, marble soaking tub at the end of the salon is a striking feature, while a separate shower room comes stocked with full-size Aesop amenities.

A thoughtful welcome awaited us: fresh flowers, artful creations from the pastry chef, and a bottle of top-notch Portuguese sparkling wine.

Modern comforts include air conditioning, reliable complimentary Wi Fi, satellite television and a well-stocked minibar.

Rooftop

The rooftop terrace provides what must be one of Lisbon’s most impressive vantage points. The 360-degree panorama encompasses the broad Tagus River, the iconic 25th April Bridge, Castelo de São Jorge, and sweeping views across the city, while the adjacent bar serves perfectly crafted drinks to accompany the spectacular sunset views.

Lisbon Club 55

As evening approaches, the hotel’s Lisbon Club 55 provides the ideal setting for aperitifs.

The Brazilian-inspired Banzeiro cocktail, crafted by mixologist Lucas, offers a particularly memorable start to the evening.

Dining at SUBA

Dinner at SUBA, located at the top of the palace, combines gastronomic excellence with stunning views over both the city and the river. Chef Fábio Alves presents creative cuisine that balances bold technique with surprising flavour combinations.

The tasting menu “Caminhos” (Paths) unfolds as eight distinct moments, each paired with carefully selected international and Portuguese wines chosen by the restaurant’s sommelier.

The culinary journey begins theatrically. Crunchy tapioca crisps with spices arrive served on a model of one of Lisbon’s traditional yellow trams. A glass box follows, which, when opened, releases a cloud of aromatic smoke meant to evoke Lisbon’s morning sea mist, revealing cod croquettes with Queijo da Serra that has been lightly smoked.

Homemade breads include classic Folar de Valpaços and traditional corn bread Broa de Milho before the menu continues with more substantial courses: tuna with oyster and caviar; horse mackerel with cauliflower and consumé; coastal fish with corn millet and razor clams; and milk-fed kid with Alcácer do Sal rice and kale. The finale features Algarve oranges with ‘carrots’ and Serra da Estrela cheese.

The wine pairing includes a notable Premier Cru champagne along with selections that showcase both Portuguese winemaking and international standards.

Morning Rituals

Morning brings bright sunshine flooding through the suite’s tall windows. There is perhaps no better antidote to the previous night’s indulgence than throwing open these windows to welcome Lisbon’s bright Atlantic light while sipping a cup of local Bica espresso coffee.

By the breakfast room is an outdoor pool, for a bracing morning dip or a refreshing swim after exploring Lisbon’s famously hilly streets.

Breakfast at Verride is served in the Winter Garden or on the pool terrace, a culinary experience that transforms the start of the day into an elegant ritual. Served as five distinct moments, it offers a refined and personalised experience featuring fresh, familiar dishes of eggs, cheeses and cold cuts together with local specialities and sweet treats that prepare you for a day of Lisbon exploration.
