Torabhaig Sound of Sleat – The Legacy Series , a Limited Edition Whisky Inspired by the Isle of Skye’s Dramatic Coastline

Torabhaig, the celebrated Isle of Skye Single Malt Distillery, continues its evocative whisky journey with the launch of Sound of Sleat, the fourth release in its acclaimed Legacy Series. Capturing the essence of the wild, misty landscapes and rugged shores that define Skye, this newest expression not only marks a significant milestone on the distillery’s path towards a definitive 10-year-old malt but also celebrates the island’s unique artistic spirit.

Named after the picturesque Sound of Sleat, the narrow stretch of water separating Skye from the mainland, it’s a beautifully nuanced single malt, matured entirely in American oak casks (Quercus Alba). The Sleat Peninsula, fondly known as “The Garden of Skye,” serves as the distillery’s muse, influencing every expression in the Legacy Series. This southernmost tip of Skye offers unparalleled natural beauty, from verdant hills to windswept shores, an environment that not only shapes the spirit but also inspires the dedicated team of nine local distillers guided by Neil MacLeod Mathieson.

Neil MacLeod Mathieson, Torabhaig whisky maker comments: “Our journey to a 10-year-old expression continues and for Sound of Sleat we’re returning to a classic ex-bourbon cask profile, enhanced by the addition of a crisp spice edge from the new American oak barrels, without losing the elegance and intricacy our fans have come to expect from a Torabhaig whisky. There is plenty of oak spice, citrus and maritime saltiness alongside a newfound waxiness we’ve discovered as our spirit continues to mature. This expression is a journey in itself as each wave of flavour washes in.”

Adding a distinctly artistic touch, the whisky’s label showcases an original painting by local Skye-based artist Ellis O’Connor. Renowned for her powerful depictions of natural landscapes, O’Connor’s vibrant artwork beautifully mirrors the energy and movement of Skye’s rugged beauty, perfectly encapsulating the whisky’s dynamic character.

On the nose, delicate orange leads, followed by touches of apricot and popcorn that lend a subtle sweetness to the maritime seaweed that echoes throughout the glass. A refined smokiness emerges with a trace of pipe tobacco, beautifully rounded out by honey, vanilla and the nostalgic note of boiled sweets. The palate introduces a light and zesty oak spice, soon joined by the rich and sweet bonfire smokiness that defines the Torabhaig character. There’s a subtle waxy texture, balanced with hints of honey and vanilla, while sea salt and seaweed gradually ebb away to reveal a final flourish of white pepper and warming sweet spice. The finish is long and elegant like a sunset over the Sound of Sleat, lingering with soft impressions of honey, stormy air and the sea.

Torabhaig Sound of Sleat – The Legacy Series is limited to just 7000 bottles in the UK and can be purchased from Master of Malt
