East Winds Saint Lucia Hotel Review

Saint Lucia, the east Caribbean Island renowned for its lush peaks, sophisticated resorts and sun-kissed climate, is a sought-after winter sun destination. Here we share an authentic island experience, staying at the charming East Winds Saint Lucia, an intimate, all-inclusive luxury Caribbean retreat of beautiful guest cottages set amongst a beachside garden. East Winds allows you to be immersed in the real Saint Lucia, away from the big brand resorts.

The enchantment of Saint Lucia begins to embrace you even before arriving. As the plane passed over the lush green peaks of a neighbouring island, the vibrant colours of Saint Lucia came into view. Modest, brightly painted houses dotted the landscape as we made our approach to Hewanorra International Airport

Soon after landing, we were through immigration and embarked on a private transfer arranged by East Winds, passing through the heart of this tropical haven, with the journey taking us along the winding Micoud Highway.

As we crossed the island I was captivated by the verdant scenery, with towering tree ferns overhanging the road, and views of banana plantations set amongst a lush landscape of palms and mango trees, flourishing under the Caribbean sun.

A Warm Welcome

East Winds, located on the northwest coast, is a private beachside property that embodies the essence of the timeless Caribbean. We were greeted with genuine warmth by Glenda and Jennel who made the check-in process a breeze.

Once we’d arrived at our cottage, and had a quick look around, we headed straight to the beach, as the soothing sound of waves paired with the gentle cooing of turtle doves beckoned us to kick back and relax. The beach itself, with its vintage wooden chairs tucked beneath palm trees, is cradled in a natural bay, making a sheltered spot to take a dip in the warm Caribbean waters.

Caribbean Cottages

The hotel’s all-inclusive approach offers a tranquil escape, with accommodation in charming cottages set amongst flowering hibiscus and swaying palms. Here, you awaken just steps from one of Saint Lucia’s most delightful beaches, naturally framed by palms.

Our accommodation, in one of the Superior Cottages, was a delight. Spacious and thoughtfully designed, it featured a king bed, chaise longue, bamboo furniture, bold print fabrics and artisan decorations. The newly appointed bathroom had lovely bathrobes in locally inspired prints – every detail created an inviting atmosphere.

East Winds offers a variety of room types, each with its own charm. The Ocean Front Rooms are close to the shores of the Caribbean Sea, while the Deluxe Cottages are favourites with repeat guests as they are secluded within the lush tropical gardens.

For those seeking a little more exclusivity, the Ocean Front Suite features a private patio, perfect for enjoying the stunning sunsets that paint the horizon.

Within the gardens are little gazebos, pavilions, and areas to relax. The main pool, surrounded by beautifully upholstered sunbeds in bold coral pink, and shaded by vintage-style parasols and swaying palms, is a charming and sociable space. There’s a swim-up bar too, for a perfectly mixed rum punch.

Gastronomy

Dining at East Winds is an experience that complements the island’s culture and history. The main oceanfront restaurant serves meals in a relaxed yet elegant setting, where breakfast and lunch are relaxed buffets, sometimes accompanied by a Caribbean steel band. Dinner transforms into a more elegant affair, with an evening dress code that invites guests to embrace a touch of sophistication. Dinner is paired with a carefully curated menu paired with selected wines. Menus were a mix of international dishes such as Mussel Mariniere and beef Carpaccio with local specialities including Saint Lucian Ground Provisions Stew or pan-seared fresh catch of the day.

Evenings have their own rituals, beginning with an aperitif at the bar, then an elegant dinner with attentive service from the friendly chatty team, followed by laughter, chatting and maybe a dance at the bar accompanied by the late-night live music.

One memorable evening featured a Land and Sea BBQ, where the chef prepared fresh catches and meats at an outdoor pit – it’s a generous and fun experience. There’s also a weekly cocktail reception, where you can mingle with fellow travellers and the resort team.

Destination Saint Lucia

East Winds is not just a place to relax; it’s an invitation to explore. The hotel offers an array of complementary activities, including a sunset cruise, a boat trip with Captain Nico and cooking classes. There is complimentary sailing and kayaking too.

We took advantage of the kayaks and paddled to a secluded beach, accessible only by water. The golden sands, dotted with rosy, pink conch shells and bits of coral, felt like a hidden paradise, like the promotional picture-perfect scenes on the local tourism authority’s website.

An unforgettable experience was our day spent with David; a local Rastafarian expect guide, recommended by the Saint Lucia Tourism Authority. He shared his intimate knowledge of the island, guiding us through local communities and natural wonders, helping us to understand authentic Saint Lucia, from stopping to play dominoes on the terrace for a local bar, to eating freshly made street food including the tasty cinnamon-flavoured ‘bakes.’

Lunch was an authentic cuisine served at a humble roadside eatery, where we savoured local chicken curry and stewed salted codfish, served with ‘provisions’—the island’s green bananas and plantains.

David introduced us to the island’s agricultural richness, taking us to a farm abundant with spices like cinnamon, and clove. Each flavour tells a story of Saint Lucia’s diverse culinary heritage, influenced by French Creole and African traditions. In fact, the island has had the dual influence of both France and Great Britain, reflected in all aspects of the island from language to gastronomy.

A visit to the capital Castries is well worth it to visit the Basilica, the largest Church in the Caribbean, known as the Minor Basilica of the Immaculate Conception, with its colourful murals. The sprawling Central Market offers a fascinating glimpse into the local produce as well as arts and crafts.

Wellness and Relaxation

After a day exploring in the Caribbean humid heat, it’s refreshing to return to the hotel’s Garden Spa. Here we’re told that wellness takes on a holistic approach, with yoga sessions and guided walks offered to guests, encouraging them, to reconnect with nature.

East Winds Saint Lucia embodies classic old-school Caribbean charm, with its intimate cottages, homemade dishes, and immersive local experiences. It invites you to embrace the magic of Saint Lucia, surrounded by lush scenery and vibrant culture.
