Introducing Andrés Brugal: Brugal’s Most Exclusive Ultra-Premium Rum

This rare expression has been developed by fifth-generation Maestra Ronera Jassil Villaneuva Quintana. A limited edition of 460 bottles, it’s been created in recognition of founder Andrés Brugal’s pioneering spirit of exploration and the many maestros who brought the brand’s passion, warmth and joy to the world.

Liquid artistry

With over 134 years of experience, Dominican distiller Brugal knows a thing or two about good rum. The story began when Don Andrés Brugal settled in the Dominican Republic after time in Spain and Cuba, founding Brugal in 1888 with the help of his sons. First the family team set about cultivating sugar cane, before distilling rum using the warmth of the tropical sun to cask-age and infuse it with complexity and flavour. A nuanced art of cask selection and ageing brought about Brugal’s signature double ageing technique, with the use of Bourbon and Oloroso sherry casks. Don Andrés then set sail once again to bring their new creation to the four corners of the globe. Each successive generation of Maestros has done the same. encouraged to pursue their own journey to bring out the very best of Brugal rum, progressively building on the accomplishments of their predecessors in a never-ending voyage of discovery that started with its founder.

The legacy continues

“This limited-edition bottling is a journey that started over a century ago. Andrés Brugal combines special single cask family reserves and our signature double aging technique to tell a dual story of my family’s legacy of rum making, as well as my own as Maestra Ronera,” said Jassil Villanueva Quintana.

Jassil is Brugal and the Dominican Republic’s youngest and first-ever female master of rum, With a vast knowledge of the casks around her, she’s been able to harness an array of local in this rare bottling; a personal tribute to the treasures of her homeland of Puerto Plata and homage to the brand’s heritage. And for the first time in Brugal’s history, she has blended two double-aged reserves with first-fill single casks.

Rich, balanced notes of roasted coffee beans and freshly harvested Cacao, layered gently with the sweet fragrance of homemade dulce de leche fudge and the buttery softness of Dominican rum cake. The result is a taste combination of oak, vanilla bean and sweet caramel flan, offset by fresh ripe berries, delicate notes of aromatic black peppercorns and sweet cloves. The silky, long-lasting dry finish is intensely rich with warming, woody spices and the liquid takes on a warm, amber hue.

Jassil Villanueva Quintana notes, “Quintessentially Dominican flavours combine to create an extraordinary liquid of astounding character that pushes the boundaries of discovery. With a touch of sweetness on the nose, and a well-rounded, long-lasting mouthfeel, this full-bodied rum is a true celebration of the distinctive flavours of Puerto Plata.”

Inspired by the Maestro’s travelling cases

The bottling is presented in a bespoke display cabinet, modelled on the travelling cases used by the earlier Maestros on their voyages. Made from American oak and etched with a diamond pattern reminiscent of the netting that surrounds many of Brugal’s bottles, it symbolises the protection of precious cargo. Twin segments fold down to reveal a limited-edition, hand-blown crystal decanter hidden within; surrounded by mirrored surfaces, the bottle is encircled by a halo of reflected light, highlighting the rich amber liquid. The mirrored surfaces are subtly etched with a map of the world, representing Brugal’s journey which first began sailing from Spain to the Caribbean.
