Colorado, Aspen
W Aspen
(4 stars)If you’re looking for a party pad, this is it. W’s clubby Living Room has a silver-coloured DJ booth, in the basement, there’s a cocktail bar and the 39˚ nightclub, while the rooftop poolside WET Deck also features regular DJs after dark along with multiple fire pits. Bedrooms (ordered by the categories of Wonderful, Spectacular, Fabulous, Wow, and Extreme Wow) come with hangover kits, their own cocktail shakers to mix up the minibar and Bose speakers. The dining style at W is laid back but trendy – tuck into ‘trash bowls’, raclette, gourmet nachos, lobster and goat cheese ravioli and spiced cauliflower fritters with grilled peaches. The architecture of the W is a modern take on the traditional mountain chalet-style hotel.
Colorado, Aspen
The St. Regis Aspen Resort
(5 stars)This five-star establishment’s pool and outdoor hot tubs look out onto the hotel’s majestic neighbour, Aspen (also known as Ajax) Mountain. Rooms at St Regis come with opulent leather and marble furnishings, Bang & Olufsen sound systems, beds and desks custom designed by Ralph Lauren and 24-hour butler service at the touch of a button. Dine in Velvet Buck and sip on outstanding cocktails at the Mountain Social. Kim Kardashian, Kanye West and daughter North, Paris Hilton and Uma Thurman have all stayed here.
Colorado, Snowmass Village
Viceroy Snowmass
(5 stars)Occupying a prime ski-in/ski-out location, the Viceroy offers upscale accommodations in Snowmass Village, just a little outside of Aspen’s centre. Ideal for families and those wanting to self-cater, rooms come with kitchenettes and there’s a daily programme of activities for younger guests. But there are also two eateries on-site – the fine dining Eight K Restaurant and a poolside Asian inspired cafe, Nest. After-dinner drinks can be taken alfresco, or indoors beside a roaring fire. The huge spa spans a total of 7,000-square-feet, incorporating plunge pools, a Vichy wet room, jacuzzis and a blissful relaxation suite. Outside, there‘s a heated saline pool with a fire pit and cabanas.
Massachusetts, Boston, Back Bay
Mandarin Oriental Boston
(5 stars)Centrally located beside the Commonwealth Avenue Mall, the Mandarin Oriental sports a modern style with vintage early 20th century touches. Head to the fourth floor to visit the 6,000-square-foot spa – quite possibly the best in the city. Aromatherapy Associates and Linda Meredith products are used for the therapies and there’s a large suite for couples’ treatments. Bar Boulud features a wall of windows and European meets New England cuisine designed by the restaurant’s namesake chef, Daniel Boulud. Following the hotel’s family-friendly credentials, children’s menus are also provided. 148 rooms and public areas are all fully accessible and the hotel and spa have been awarded Forbes Travel Guide’s Five-Stars.
Florida, Orlando
The Ritz-Carlton Orlando, Grande Lakes
(5 stars)Offering villa living within a hotel complex, each of the 37 residences here has at least three bedrooms and a pool. The resort provides guests with a full-service spa, an 18-hole Greg Norman Signature Golf Course, 11 restaurants and bars, tennis courts, children’s activities, babysitting services, water sports and fishing in the neighbouring Grande Lakes. Covering 500 acres, the venue has been inspired by its natural surroundings and provides on-site eco-tours. And for those wanting some adult-only time, there’s a child-free pool area. It’s a relatively new addition to the Orlando hotel scene (and the Ritz-Carlton portfolio), having opened its doors in 2018.
Florida, Orlando
JW Marriott Orlando Grande Lakes
(5 stars)Standing tall on the city’s horizon, the JW Marriott is just across from the Ritz-Carlton. A lazy river and family-oriented pool with plenty of sunloungers contrast three peaceful hydrotherapy pools found in the full-service spa (but even this caters to kids with a menu of children’s treatments). There’s a whole retail avenue inside, including shops, a Starbucks and a healthy cafe. Large bedrooms have Revive bedding in soothing colour schemes, coffee makers, iHome docking stations, Aromatherapy Associates toiletries and 65 inch TVs. Farm to table cuisine is served in the many on-site eateries, ranging from fine dining to a sushi bar and poolside grill.
Florida, Orlando
Four Seasons Orlando
(5 stars)A brand renowned for its culinary offer, this Four Seasons holds up its reputation. Ravello serves fine Mediterranean cuisine alongside fine vintages – as well as hosting a bi-weekly Disney character breakfast. Stay here and you can enjoy the early entry theme park privilege otherwise reserved for Disney’s own on-site hotels. You’ll be transferred via private coach service from this gated community to the four parks. The architecture is reminiscent of Spain, while interior decor echoes contemporary Italian style. Two infinity pools enable families and adults to enjoy some sun-time separately – the child-friendly one has waterslides and a lazy river.
Florida, Orlando
Waldorf Astoria Orlando
(5 stars)If you’d like to stay as close to Disney as possible – but not in one of their themed hotels – this is the place to book. Part of the Bonnet Creek complex, it’s a short drive from the theme parks, yet a beautifully calm oasis to escape the tourist bustle. Featuring local artwork, a Rees Jones-designed golf course, fancy boutiques and a glamorous cocktail bar, it’s deeply refined. However, kids are warmly welcomed too, kept occupied with their own programme of activities and dedicated pool – allowing the adults to enjoy some freshly baked croissants, in-room Nespresso coffee, beauty treatments or even a poolside Prosecco Popsicle.
California, San Diego
The Loews Coronado Bay Resort and Spa
(4 stars)For a full-on beach (or boating) holiday, choose this 439 room resort on the Coronado Peninsula. It has its very own full-service 80-slip marina offering gondola rides, surf lessons and sunset cruises. And there’s a beach shuttle – although it is just a five-minute walk along a private path from the resort to the sandy shores. This location does mean it’s a little further out from San Diego, but still within a 20-minute taxi ride. Pet and family-friendly, the hotel has a programme of events for kids, a teen lounge, three pools and a global fusion restaurant to keep all palates happy.
California, Carlsbad
Park Hyatt Aviara Resort
(5 stars)This Forbes Five-Star and AAA Five-Diamond luxury resort has an enviable coastal location in a quiet neighbourhood, along with excellent amenities. There’s an 18-hole Arnold Palmer designed golf course, first-rate tennis courts, a spa with 20 treatment rooms, an adult-only pool and cabanas, waterslides for the kids, and a sociable programme of varied activities ideal for those travelling solo. The Park Hyatt Aviara is sizable – it has 327 spacious rooms and lots going on throughout the day and night. This makes it perfect for families – or single travellers – wanting plenty to do, both in and around the hotel’s perimeter.
California, Los Angeles, Beverly Hills
Beverly Wilshire, A Four Seasons Hotel
(5 stars)In possession of a salubrious address, this hotel is found right across the road from Rodeo Drive. At the centre of the property, is the hotel’s Mediterranean-styled heated pool and dining terrace, providing an opportunity to quaff cocktails and soak up some rays from your own comfy cabana. Michelin-starred cuisine is on-site, in the form of CUT, a seafood and steakhouse restaurant (also by acclaimed restauranteur Wolfgang Puck). Or watch the world go by from the front of the building, with a chic and healthy lunch at THE Blvd. Pets are made very welcome if you want to bring them along, with bowls and baskets provided.
New York State, Brooklyn
The William Vale
(5 stars)Found in the hipster district of Williamsburg, this hotel has the largest pool of any in New York. 208 rooms have been designed by Studio Munge in a futuristic style with geometrics, soft greys, light woods, picture windows, huge balconies and glowing space-aged lighting. After dark, take a seat on one of the city’s hottest rooftop bars – Westlight – with its gorgeous panoramic views, great cocktails and delicious small plates. Or feast on Michelin starred cuisine from Andrew Carmellini in the main dining room. And when you crave a decadent sweet treat, Wylie Susfresene’s Hi Du’s Donut creations are lip-smackingly good. There’s a cutting edge gym overlooking the pool area, a shopping concourse just beneath the hotel and a delightful green area just in front of the entrance too.
