Hotel Danieli Returns as a Four Seasons Following Landmark Restoration

For over 200 years, Hotel Danieli has stood as one of Venice’s defining addresses. Positioned on the Riva degli Schiavoni, close to St Mark’s Square, it has welcomed royalty, artists and writers including Lord Byron, Charles Dickens and Marcel Proust, all drawn by its remarkable setting overlooking the Venetian Lagoon.

Now, following one of the most significant restorations in its history, the property has reopened as Danieli, Venezia, A Four Seasons Hotel, bringing one of Italy’s best-known historic hotels into the Four Seasons collection.

Unlike many recent openings in the city, this isn’t about creating something new. Danieli has never needed reinventing. Instead, the focus has been on protecting Danieli’s character rather than changing it, with the restoration designed to enhance rather than redefine the hotel.

The story begins in the late 15th century with Palazzo Dandolo, built as the home of one of Venice’s most influential noble families. The building became a hotel in 1822 under entrepreneur Giuseppe Dal Niel, whose nickname, “Danieli”, would eventually give the property its name. As demand grew, neighbouring palaces were incorporated, creating the collection of historic buildings that accommodate guests today.

So far, the restoration has focussed on Palazzo Dandolo and Palazzo Casa Nuova, with French interior designer Pierre-Yves Rochon leading the work. His approach is remarkably restrained. Historic ceilings, carved stonework and original decorative details have been restored rather than replaced, while Murano glass, Rubelli fabrics and terrazzo flooring celebrate Venetian craftsmanship.

That same restraint carries through to the accommodation. Many of the 120 guestrooms and suites look across the water towards San Giorgio Maggiore, while others overlook canals or the city’s distinctive terracotta rooftops. Several suites have been reconfigured during the restoration, and the addition of more connecting rooms makes Danieli well suited to families as well as couples exploring Venice.

One space, however, remains almost timeless. Terrazza Danieli has long been one of Venice’s most celebrated dining terraces, and the view is every bit as compelling as ever, stretching across the waterfront towards San Giorgio Maggiore. The restaurant has been refreshed, but wisely, the setting remains the star.

Executive Chef Adriano Rausa’s menus showcase the flavours of the Veneto, with Adriatic seafood and seasonal local produce featuring throughout. Several dishes are finished tableside, adding a touch of theatre while allowing the setting to remain the real focal point. Next door, the bar continues the Venetian tradition of aperitivo as evening settles over the city.

The restoration is still evolving. Later this year, Danieli Spa will open, introducing a dedicated wellness space for the first time, with treatment rooms, a sauna and hammam providing a quieter retreat from the energy of the city outside.

Even so, Danieli’s greatest luxury remains its address. Arriving by water taxi directly outside the hotel is one of Venice’s classic arrivals, with St Mark’s Basilica, the Doge’s Palace and the Bridge of Sighs only a short walk away. Murano, Burano and the surrounding islands are equally easy to explore by boat.

For Four Seasons, Danieli becomes its fourth Italian property, joining hotels in Milan, Florence and Taormina. For Venice, however, it marks the revival of one of the city’s best-known hotels.

Perhaps the greatest compliment any restoration can receive is that it doesn’t feel like one at all, and Danieli achieves exactly that. Guests still pass beneath the Gothic arches of Palazzo Dandolo, still dine on Terrazza Danieli and still watch the light soften across the Venetian waterfront. The difference lies in everything working behind the scenes. One of Venice’s most celebrated hotels has been carefully prepared for many more years at the heart of the city.
