Nestled amidst the scenic beauty of the Lake District, with Lake Windermere gently lapping at its shores, Langdale Chase is eagerly preparing for its grand reopening in Autumn 2023. Meticulously restored and thoughtfully reimagined, this iconic establishment is being transformed into a truly unique contemporary hotel that promises an unforgettable experience for visitors. It embraces its heritage, recapturing the essence of its origins while delivering impeccable service.
The hotel will offer 30 exquisitely designed bedrooms, each exuding a timeless charm that harmonizes with the colours of the surrounding water and mountains. Guests will have the pleasure of lounging in flowing spaces that open onto garden terraces, a new cocktail bar, and inviting real fires, providing the perfect setting to unwind and relax.
Daniel Thwaites, the family-owned hospitality business, owns Langdale Chase, and their vision for the Grade II listed building and gardens is to create a serene sanctuary for guests. The renovations, the most extensive to date, pay homage to the golden era of the Lake District in the 1920s and 1930s, blending modern elements with the property’s Victorian villa charm. Jane Goff, the Director at Goff Associates Ltd, has skillfully infused the interiors with contemporary elements, integrating the surrounding lakeside environment with soothing natural tones and a calming design concept. Each room boasts its own distinct personality, with elegant patterns, textured wallpapers, and soft furnishings adding warmth and character.
The spacious rooms will be a discreet haven for hotel guests, with 21 bedrooms in the main house, eight in the Lakehouse, and an exclusive Boathouse suite. All accommodations are equipped with minibars, air-conditioning, and luxurious marble bathrooms stocked with products from Bath House, a Cumbrian-based fragrance and skincare brand. Many rooms feature baths strategically placed to offer breathtaking lake views, while ground floor options cater to dog-friendly visitors. The splendid suites boast unparalleled vistas of Windermere and the nearby fells, complete with private reading corners. The Boathouse, an enchanting hideaway at the far end of the gardens, floats atop the water, offering a romantic and secluded setting with a private rooftop terrace and beach, allowing guests to savor panoramic lake views.
To delight the palates of its guests, Langdale Chase will feature a two AA Rosette-awarded restaurant housed within the main building. With floor-to-ceiling glass windows overlooking the lush gardens and Windermere, Executive Chef Michael Cole will curate a menu inspired by classic British cuisine and influenced by the region’s natural bounty. Additionally, a stylish bar at the hotel’s front will be a favored spot for guests to relax after a hike or enjoy an evening nightcap. The flowing lounges provide the perfect vantage point to admire the iconic Langdale Pikes and Coniston Fells, while the garden terraces offer an idyllic outdoor setting for guests to savor the lake and fells during warmer months. For more intimate moments, there’s a cozy cinema and a newly developed wine tasting room.
Speaking of the project, Richard Bailey, Executive Chairman of Daniel Thwaites, said: “Langdale Chase is a magical place. It’s a privilege to be part of the team that will wow guests with its new look and feel. I have absolute confidence that reinventing it will take people by storm, that we are creating something truly special. With contemporary British design matched to an impressive new gourmet menu in our award-winning restaurant, we want to build a new generation of loyal supporters for the hotel who feel intrinsically as much a part of the Langdale Chase family as we do.”
Regarded as the Lake District National Park’s finest lakeside address, Langdale Chase was originally built in 1890 as a luxurious private residence before welcoming its first hotel guests in 1937. Remarkable architectural features, including the original boathouse, grace the property, which rests on 6.4 acres of historic gardens meticulously designed by the renowned landscape architect, Thomas Mawson, also known for his work on the Hague’s Peace Palace Gardens.
As the days draw closer to Autumn 2023, anticipation builds for the grand reopening of Langdale Chase, a beacon of elegance and hospitality in the heart of the breathtaking Lake District.
