Eat Do Sleep Bucharest

There is something wonderfully unexpected about Bucharest. A city that feels at once grand and gritty, elegant yet wonderfully chaotic in places, where Belle Époque architecture sits beside stark reminders of the communist era, and where some of the best experiences often happen behind unassuming doors. It is a city that never feels overly polished, and that is exactly part of its charm. Bucharest rewards curiosity. Look a little closer and you will find rooftop restaurants with sweeping skyline views, cafés hidden inside historic buildings and some of the warmest hospitality in Eastern Europe. It is affordable, creative and increasingly confident in itself, while still feeling refreshingly authentic compared to many of Europe’s more over-touristed capitals.

EAT

Amethyst Sky Bar

Perched at the very top of Union Plaza Hotel, Amethyst Sky Bar feels made for special occasions. Wrapped almost entirely in glass, the restaurant delivers uninterrupted views across Bucharest, particularly magical after sunset when the city begins to sparkle below. The menu leans international, but with enough flair to feel memorable rather than generic. The standout is undoubtedly the signature burger, served in an eye-catching black bun encasing richly flavoured Uruguayan beef, while desserts are equally theatrical; the Amethyst Surprise not to be missed. Inside, fairy lights cascade down the windows, while the dramatic skyline beyond creates a setting you simply can’t tear yourself away from.

Grand Café Van Gogh

From the outside, Grand Café Van Gogh appears relatively modest, but step inside and it unfolds room by room like a tardis, each space immersed in the world of Van Gogh. High ceilings, old-world architectural details and cosy corners give it a wonderfully characterful feel. The menu is heavily egg-based, with beautifully presented omelettes, pancakes and towering meringues taking centre stage, all delivered with surprising attention to detail considering the reasonably priced menu. Its central location makes it an ideal lunch stop while exploring the Old Town, though you could just as easily lose an hour or two here over coffee alone.

Caru’ cu bere

Could this be the most entertaining evening in Bucharest? Quite possibly.

Caru’ cu bere is far more than just a restaurant. It is an experience. Housed inside a spectacular Neo-Gothic building complete with stained glass, carved wood and soaring ceilings, the atmosphere feels electric from the moment you enter. Throughout the evening, live dancers perform traditional Romanian routines, with guests regularly encouraged to join in. Somehow, it never feels gimmicky; instead, the entire room becomes part of the performance.

The food is unapologetically hearty Romanian comfort food. Think giant pork knuckles, bean soup served inside hollowed bread bowls and platters seemingly designed for people who have not eaten for days. Then comes the papanasi: enormous Romanian doughnuts topped with sweet cheese, sour cream and homemade jam. Officially, a portion contains two, but realistically one serving could feed an entire table. Even the doughnut holes are turned into fried balls and balanced on top, ensuring absolutely no dough goes to waste.

The Vault (drink)

Tucked beneath The Marmorosch Bucharest, The Vault offers one of the most unique drinking experiences in the city. Located inside the building’s original bank vault, the bar retains many of its historic features, including safes still embedded into the walls and an enormous armoured vault door, creating an atmosphere that feels somewhere between old-world glamour and secret speakeasy. It’s worth arriving slightly early simply to explore: some of the old safe deposit drawers still slide open, adding a layer of discovery to the experience. Meanwhile, the cocktail list matches the setting perfectly: extravagant, polished and theatrical without tipping into novelty.

DO

Get creative at Ceramic Café Bucuresti

For a slower, more mindful side of Bucharest, Ceramic Café Bucuresti is the perfect antidote to the city’s busy streets. The concept is simple but strangely addictive: choose a ceramic item — anything from a vase to a teapot — then settle in with brushes, palettes and what feels like an endless selection of paint colours to create your masterpiece. Hours seem to disappear here. A word of warning though: perhaps avoid bringing your naturally artistic friends unless you enjoy quietly questioning your own creative ability halfway through painting a mug. Once finished, the café fires your creation and you can collect it later, transformed into a glossy keepsake to take home. It is wholesome, calming and unexpectedly therapeutic.

Learn the city’s story on a walking or cycle tour

One of the best ways to understand Bucharest is simply to walk or cycle it. The stories are fascinating, often shocking and sometimes surprisingly emotional. Learning how entire neighbourhoods were demolished to make way for massive civic projects, and how historic churches were literally moved on wheels to save them from destruction. Hearing these stories while standing in the streets where they happened gives the city an entirely different dimension. It is one of those experiences that changes how you see Bucharest: no longer simply as a beautiful city, but as one shaped by resilience and reinvention.

Relax at Therme Spa

Part spa, part waterpark and part tropical escape, Therme caters equally well to families, couples and adults simply wanting to unwind. The Galaxy area delivers full childlike chaos with water slides and pools, while the Palm and Elysium zones focus on relaxation, complete with infrared beds, mineral pools and saunas. The real magic happens after dark. Stay into the evening and the atmosphere transforms completely, with illuminated pools glowing beneath the enormous glass roof while reflections dance overhead like stars. In summer, the outdoor beach areas make it feel even further removed from the pace and energy of a capital city. You could easily spend an entire day here, and probably still not try everything.

SLEEP

The Marmorosch Bucharest, Autograph Collection

Few hotels capture Bucharest’s old-world grandeur quite like The Marmorosch Bucharest, Autograph Collection. Set inside a beautifully restored former bank building, the hotel embraces its heritage at every opportunity, blending Art Deco elegance with contemporary luxury. Many original architectural details remain intact, from soaring ceilings to marble finishes and statement chandeliers, while the rooms feel rich and cocooning rather than overly minimal. Location-wise, it is difficult to beat. Step outside and you are immediately immersed in the energy of the Old Town, with restaurants, bars and historic landmarks all within walking distance.
